Gum Disease Treatment

Gum Disease: Types and Treatments

Gum disease (periodontal disease) is a bacterial infection of the tissues supporting the teeth, caused by plaque build-up around and below the gum line.

Gingivitis:

is the early, reversible stage of gum disease that can be effectively treated with regular professional hygiene care and strict home cleaning. Please book an "Extended Advanced Hygiene" session.

Periodontitis:

is the advanced, irreversible stage, where infection damages the bone and supporting tissues. It causes pockets, gum recession, and tooth mobility, requiring ongoing management rather than a one-time treatment.

Management of Periodontitis

Because periodontitis can’t be reversed, it needs to be managed carefully and consistently rather than treated just once. Your journey begins with a thorough gum assessment, where we measure pocket depths, check bone levels, and identify risk factors such as smoking or diabetes.

Your dentist or hygienist will then create a personalised care plan for you. This may involve deep cleaning sessions (Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy) to remove bacteria from below the gums, or surgical treatment if deeper areas need attention.

Ongoing success depends on regular hygiene visits, home care, and close monitoring.

What Is Non-Surgical Periodontal Treatment (NSPT)?

Non-Surgical Periodontal Treatment (NSPT), also known as deep cleaning for gum disease, is a conservative procedure that removes bacterial plaque and tartar from below the gum line. This treatment helps control gum infection, reduce pocket depth, and protect the bone supporting your teeth — all without surgery.

Performed under local anaesthetic for comfort, NSPT may be completed over one or more sessions depending on the severity of your periodontal disease. Following treatment, regular hygiene maintenance and excellent home oral care are key to keeping gums healthy and preventing further progression of gum disease.

This treatment usually requires two to four sessions, with each session lasting around one hour and costing £240.

Your Path to Healthy Gums

1. Assessment and Diagnosis

Your journey begins with a comprehensive gum assessment. We measure pocket depths, evaluate bone support, and identify risk factors such as smoking or diabetes. This helps us diagnose the type and severity of gum disease and plan your personalised treatment.

2. First Deep Cleaning Session (NSPT)

The first Non-Surgical Periodontal Treatment (deep cleaning) focuses on one side or area of the mouth. Bacterial deposits and tartar are removed from below the gum line under local anaesthetic for comfort.

3. Second Deep Cleaning Session (NSPT)

The second session completes the cleaning in the remaining areas. This thorough bacterial removal helps reduce gum inflammation and pocket depth.

4. Review and Oral Hygiene Instruction

Around 2–3 weeks later, we perform a review appointment to monitor healing, measure progress, and provide tailored home care advice to maintain your results.

5. Hygiene Maintenance Session

Once the initial infection is under control, regular hygiene sessions are essential — typically every 3 months. These visits help prevent bacterial build-up and maintain gum stability.

6. Periodontal Review and Monitoring

Every 6 to 12 months, a comprehensive review is carried out to reassess pocket depths and bone levels. If inflammation persists or pockets remain deep, further treatment or adjustments may be needed.

7. Referral to a Specialist (if required)

If symptoms do not improve or advanced bone loss is detected, you may be referred to a periodontist for specialist care, which could involve surgical periodontal therapy.

Lifestyles & Medical Conditions Linked to Gum Disease

Smoking

Smoking reduces blood flow to the gums, raising the risk of gum disease. Vaping and nicotine pouches (snus) have similar effects, irritating gum tissues and slowing recovery.

➡️ Quitting or reducing smoking can significantly improve gum health, healing, and overall treatment success.

Diabetes & Cardiovascular

Especially when blood sugar levels are not well controlled, diabetes increases the risk and severity of gum disease.

➡️ Maintaining good blood sugar control and regular dental hygiene visits greatly lower this risk.

Hormonal Changes

During pregnancy, menopause, or puberty, hormonal fluctuations can heighten gum sensitivity and inflammation.

➡️ With meticulous home care and more frequent hygiene visits, these changes can be safely managed, keeping your gums healthy.

Your gums are a gateway to your overall health!

FAQs

Most Frequently Asked Questions About Gum Disease:

The main cause of tooth loss isn’t decay — it’s gum disease. This chronic infection damages the gums and bone that support your teeth, often starting with bleeding or swelling.

That’s why at Angel Smile, we take gum health very seriously. Our hygiene levels go beyond standard cleaning, offering advanced technology and deeper care to keep your gums healthy and your smile lasting.

Gum disease is an infection of the gums and supporting bone caused by bacteria that build up around the teeth.
In its early stage, gingivitis, you may notice bleeding gums, bad breath, or redness and swelling. If untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, where the gums pull away from the teeth, leading to bone loss or tooth mobility.

The good news is that with early diagnosis and teamwork between you and your dental team, gum disease can be well managed.
At Angel Smile, we’ll stay beside you every step of the way.

with your commitment and our support, the prognosis is very good.

A deep gum cleaning — also known as non-surgical periodontal treatment (NSPT) — is recommended when gum disease has caused plaque and bacteria to collect below the gumline, where a normal cleaning can’t reach.

During this treatment, your dentist gently cleans these deeper areas under local anaesthetic to remove infection, reduce inflammation, and help your gums heal naturally.
It’s a way to stop gum disease from progressing and protect the bone that supports your teeth from further loss.

Unless your case requires immediate specialist care, most patients begin their gum treatment here at the practice to help stabilise the condition.
If the gums don’t fully respond, or if the disease is more advanced, we will refer you to a specialist periodontist for further assessment or surgical treatment.

Beside professional treatment, your commitment and home care play the biggest role in long-term success

Long-term success depends on your daily oral care and regular maintenance visits.
Brush twice daily with an electric toothbrush, clean between teeth daily with TEPE brushes and floss, and attend 3-monthly hygiene sessions as recommended.

Avoid smoking and manage medical conditions like diabetes, which can worsen gum disease and slow healing.
